What if you have a dark tooth visible when you smile? The first option was discussed below with a special bleach. What if the tooth has no root canal filling? The dentist should check the tooth to see if the nerve has died. If so, then a root canal is needed. If the nerve is healthy, then the next conservative option would be direct resin (dental) bonding. The dark color can be masked with a special color agent and multiple layers of bonding resin can be placed over the tooth, to match the adjacent teeth. The bonding can last many years and most, if not all of the tooth structure is preserved. This is especially critical in a very young patient, but applies to patients of all ages.
